Carl Frank is a professional illustrator, concept artist, and occasional art director most known for his work in fantasy-themed gaming, having contributed to world-famous properties including collectible card games such as Magic: The Gathering, Warhammer, World of Warcraft, and Legend of the Five Rings, and role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, and virtual card games such as Mythgard, among many other projects. He was Lead Character Line Artist, Art Director and Poster Artist on an indie animated movie featuring the voice talents of Morena Baccarin, William Shatner, Ray Wise, Bill Moseley. Both a digital and traditional artist, he has created personalized one-of-a-kind commissioned paintings, and digital images for a broad range of products.
Discovering a knack for drawing at an early age, he always wanted to make his living from a pursuit in the arts. Shortly after earning a BFA in illustration from California State University, Fullerton, he began working professionally for various trade magazines and the like. But he was always drawn to fantastic art, having been inspired by movies like Star Wars (the first movie he saw in a theatre!) and fantasy book cover artists.
His first published fantasy work appeared in the first set of Legend of the Five Rings CCG, in 1995. Since then, fantasy art has dominated his portfolio.
Seeking to begin creating more personal works as well, he has been focusing on fantasy and science fiction work, often with a bit of surrealism thrown in, as his fascination with dreams (including lucid dreams) has often been a source of inspiration. Watch for more such work on the horizon.
